Small Group Q & A

What is a small group?
A small group at Rolling Hills Covenant Church is a group of adults or youths of 8-12 people who meet on a regular basis for fellowship, study of Scripture, prayer, and caring for each other in practical ways. Led by a mature and trained leader, each group consists of meetings in homes, on the job, or wherever they choose.

How important are small groups?
We believe that small groups are essential to the growth of the Christian believer. They’re the place where the real ministry of fellowship takes place as we study God’s Word, support, and share our lives with one another. We believe that meeting together on a regular basis is time well spent.

Which group should I join?
We suggest you join a group based on your “station in life” rather than on geography or night of the week. Small groups work best when you share common interests and backgrounds.

How do I sign up?
You can join a small group at any time. However, we have scheduled two weekends of September, January, and April as our formal sign-up period. Small group sign-ups during these weekends are posted in the small group catalog, webpage, or at the small group tables right after each service.

When & where do they meet?
Small groups meet on various nights of the week throughout Palos Verdes, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance, San Pedro, Lomita, Redondo Beach and other surrounding cities.

What is the required commitment?
Each group has a quarterly commitment of 8-10 weeks. Most group meets on a weekly basis, while some groups are bi-weekly. After each quarter, you have the option of continuing with your current group, switch to another group, or take a break.

What will we study?
The studies are based on a “lecture/lab” approach. Picture the Sunday morning sermon as the lecture and your small group study as the lab. Notes for each week’s study will be provided in the worship folder for that week’s meeting. Groups that take this study approach are called “sermon-base” groups. Other types of groups may go through their choice of a study such as video series, or relating special interest topic such as marriage, parenting, singles, divorce recovery, celebrate recovery, or care and counseling groups. These groups are called “special interest” groups.

What about childcare?
We leave it up to each group to work out their own childcare. Sometimes it works best for groups to share a sitter, swap childcare with another group that meets at another evening, or provide their own in-house childcare.
