PHILIPPIANS: Christ the Source
of Joy and Strength
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Phil 2:5-7 NIV)

Facing horrific trials, Paul encourages his brothers and sisters in Christ with an outstanding letter. The book of Philippians contains some of the most profound and crucial teaching on the LORD Jesus Christ in the entire Bible. The major theme is pursuing Christ- likeness as the most defining element of spiritual growth. In spite of his imprisonment, the dominant tone of the letter is joyful. Through Paul, the Holy Spirit taught that circumstances don’t dictate the quality of joy believers have in Christ. How did Paul find joy in prison? He didn’t. He took his joy in Christ into jail with him; therefore, joy was his continual companion.
